Progress is being made! Just a couple more thing but I need some advice from my fellow techs here on OPPO.

Where we are right now is that the busted trans is out. The reverse was inop after the hit and there was an output shaft seal leaking. We got the trans out last week and opened it up. Yeah it’s going to need a complete rebuild and other parts (output shaft broken, pleasure pressure plate, metal particulates ).

Kinja'd!!!

My question is, on this 2000 F-250 7.3L 2WD, are we better of finding a good used trans or having it rebuild? We took it to a couple trans shops to get some prices since most of my tools for that sort of thing grew legs. Best price was from a really nice place at $800 with 1 year warranty. Are there any rebuilt trans available online for that price? Locally, salvage yards at the minimum wanted $950.

Honestly $800 sounds like a pretty decent price for a rebuild. I spent $1100 on rebuilding the 46RE in our old Ram only to have it fail 3 weeks later though. I’m not a good source for transmission related information

Also had to laugh at “pleasure plate” up there. I’m twelve :)

Aside: Got the S40 back, Voltek says it’s likely the master cylinder. Bled it 6 times, still getting air introduced into the system from somewhere

I think the warrantied unit from the (reputable?) trans shop might be a good idea.

When it comes to salvage yards, blindly swapping in an allegedly good used transmission makes me nervous (especially if there’s no warranty). Some of them can indeed have many miles left in them before they start to fail, but with all the work it takes to remove/install, there’s really no better time for a rebuild.

At any rate, if you have a bunch of damaged “hard parts” in your existing tranny, that unit may not be worth rebuilding.

For that $800 are they just using ‘parts around the shop’ or are they going to use ford parts to actually repair it?

I have a local shop that is pretty cheap but they just use whatever is laying around for that cheap price. They also give you a higher price that has the oem parts new in a rebuild.

My 96 Ram 1500 was $800 to ‘fix’ and $1500 to repair. I ended up selling it with the blown out transmission.

46RE? 100% of those are sold with a blown transmission; some just don’t realize it :)

$800 is really cheap for a 4R100. If it checks out, that’s a good deal.

Jasper (I know some people have had issues), BTS, or Suncoast will be a lot higher - but not local. I believe my co-worker takes his truck to Powerstroke Magic. Giving them or a Ford dealer a call could provide an interesting price point. Or they could maybe point you in a good direction for a trusted trans builder.

There is also Diesel Innovations.

They said they were going to purchase that parts they need plus a repair kit (clutches, bands, etc) Though, it might be an aftermarket kit

We’ve seen though to have a failed seal at the booster a lot. Also, the pressure sensors that are on the cylinder go bad sometimes.

The salvage yard has been around forever and has a couple stores around town (huge facilities) Best part is, they specialize on trucks only. No cars.

Maybe I misread. Was the $800 unit from a trans shop or salvage yard?

Yeah those 4R100's don’t come cheap. They were so damn strong. DI’s kit is well priced for an update. Thanks for the info :]

What has he been driving for work all this time? Did he buy a second truck?

he’s using my mom’s ML320 to do random job site inspections and meeting. As far as delivering materials to job sites, he’s been relying on the companies shipping crew (who are extremely unreliable). He want to get it running so he can sell it. Although it is 16 years old and well over 500K miles on the ticker, these trucks can still fetch a pretty penny, especially potential buyers that want to take them t Mexico. He was offered $7000 USD as isthe other day but we can get more once running and after a good detail

yea I got 72k out of my first and 36k out of my second in that truck. Loved the truck and the engine was strong, trans was a total piece though.

Hmm, would a failed pressure sensor keep the brake warning light from coming on when the fluid is low?

Did they consider what had happened to the truck/broken when giving the quote? Otherwise you may end up on the hook for more money when they have to replace parts that they were not expecting to/wouldn’t have to if the transmission were just worn out.

They looked it over the trans when we took it to them, got the price quote for the rebuild accordingly. Everything else is ready to go. We got a really good truck bed for it for $200 w/lights and bumper. We did the leaf springs here for cheap (good used parts) for another $100. All we need is the trans job/replacement trans
